MOVING DAY CHECKLIST

Moving can be overwhelming, but with a few moving day essentials and a moving day checklist, it can reduce stress and ensure that our move will go much more smoothly.

Create a Moving Day Checklist

It can help to create a moving day checklist in addition to a day before moving checklist since there are many things to remember to do when preparing for a move. A moving checklist should include some important tasks such as forwarding mail and who needs to be updated with the new address. It is important to inform the power company so that they can turn off the utilities at our old house as well as hook them up at the new house. It is also a good idea to transfer school and medical records for the family to the new school and healthcare professionals in advance and give our employer adequate notice.

Keep Important Papers in a Handy Location

Since a lot of items can get misplaced during a move, it is a good idea to keep important papers all together in one location, such as in a box or folder. Important documents may include birth certificates, medical cards, social security numbers, immunization records for children, and tax information. That way, when they are needed at the new house, it won’t be necessary to search for them when they are needed, saving our time and sanity.

Plan Ahead

How to get ready for moving day will vary for different people, but preparation is always a must. If we are hiring a moving company or renting a moving truck, it is ideal to get a few different price quotes from a few different companies in order to get the best deal. If needed, it’s a good idea to get quotes on a few moving insurance or renters insurance policies. For long-distance moves, it may be necessary to book a hotel or two along the way. Once the moving date has been decided, it’s a good idea to book a hotel in advance to lock in the best rate and to ensure that they are available when we need them.

Purge While Everything is Pulled Out

Since everything in the house will get pulled from cupboards and closets to pack, it’s a good time to re-access what items are worth keeping and which ones will have to go. Having fewer items to pack will save time and money since it may be possible to get a smaller moving truck and storage space, and we will need fewer packing materials. A yard sale is a great way to unload unwanted items while making a little extra cash. Otherwise, there are many organizations that will gladly accept donations and will put them to good use. Once unwanted items have been taken care of, it’s time to start gathering packing materials such as bubble wrap, boxes, and tape. Many stores have boxes to give away after their shipments come in, and most moving companies also offer moving supplies, which is more convenient but at a cost.

Stay Organized Amidst the Chaos

To stay level-headed during a move, it is crucial to keep everything organized. It is a good idea to have a master list of all the household items and label every box accordingly. That way, it lessens the chance of misplacing items and will make unpacking much easier since the labeling will indicate which rooms they belong in the new house.

Don’t Wait to Order New Furniture and Appliances

If the new residence doesn’t have appliances or furniture, it is a good time to order them since they could be out of stock, and we will need to order them in. This way, we won’t have to live without a washing machine or dishwasher in the meantime.
